The couple moved to the UK from Poland in 2008 and have been navigating the rental market ever since. Their dream has always been to own their own home - with enough space for their two sons to have separate bedrooms, and some pets.
Now, they’re the proud owners of a brand new, four-bedroom detached home at Hartshead View in Oldham, a development launched by Countryside Homes, part of the Vistry Group, in May last year.
Monika, a staff nurse, and Damian, a HGV driver, were living in a three-bedroom terraced home in Oldham previously, and have been saving for a deposit for over five years. Monika explains:
“We’ve lived in rental properties for so many years and regret not buying a property sooner. We knew we needed to go for it whilst the opportunity was there.”
“Before I qualified as a nurse, our budget was much lower, but we’re in a better financial position now and we were able to raise a deposit by working extra shifts, skipping holidays, and my father left some money when he passed away.
“Because of our experiences renting, our dream was to own a new build property. We really wanted to be the first people living in the home and knew that a new build would be more energy efficient.
“Saving on fuel costs was the main consideration for us, but we love the location of Hartshead View and the size of our home. We chose The Leven house type, which is a four-bed detached, with a big open-plan kitchen and family space.
“The boys love that it has a garage (they’re very active) and we’re looking forward to decorating it ourselves, and getting pets - all things we weren’t able to do before.
“Our sales consultant, Lisa, helped us through every step of the process and we have such good memories of being in the sales office. We completed in December and it’s the dream start to 2025 - we’re beyond excited after all these years of renting.”
