Get digging: Create a dream garden from scratch

When it comes to designing a garden, the possibilities are endless. At Countryside Homes, our gardens offer you the freedom to make the space your own. But let’s face it, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with where to start.

Here’s some garden design inspiration to get you started.

Plan your layout

When imagining your ideal garden, it's best to think practically and decide on the layout first.

Whether your garden is north or south-facing will influence some of the layout decisions you can make. For example, where you should position furniture so you can enjoy the sunshine.

Other questions include, do you want to add a water feature, flower beds or a pergola? Or do you need extra paving or a tiered garden design to maximise your space?

You might change some aspects of your garden over time, but you’ll want to get the basics right as it’s a long-term investment.

Workaround focal points

Whether you fancy a low-maintenance garden or even a wild garden design - having a focal point is the best way to create an impact.

Focal points could include raised beds, fire pits, a decorative garden wall, or a vegetable patch.

You can use surrounding plants or bright colours to frame your focal points. A vibrant splash of colour against a backdrop of green can be a very effective, contemporary garden design.

Easy garden designs

Choosing a manageable garden design is crucial. We don’t all know how to landscape a garden, so some things might be best left to professionals. But, there are some easy ways to bring your garden to life.

  1. A simple border - A flower border along a fence, wall or pathway is an easy way to make a garden look more defined. It’s also manageable because weeding, watering and feeding will be minimal.
  2. Container garden clusters - Grouping potted plants together creates a simple, colourful feature. They’re ideal for small spaces, on patios or paved areas. Your local garden centre will be well stocked with different types of plants and pots to suit your style and colour scheme.
  3. Simple stepping stone path - Creating a decorative but functional pathway through a lawn breaks up large green areas. It’s also an easy way to draw attention to a focal point.

Children’s garden design ideas

  1. Beanpole teepee - Designing a garden with children in mind is all about sparking their imagination. Easy-to-construct bamboo poles and fast-growing climbing plants like runner beans create magical enclosed spaces for kids to enjoy.
  2. Mud kitchen - An area where kids can mix mud, water, and natural materials is a simple way to keep kids entertained in the garden. The kitchen doesn’t have to be extravagant, it could be made up of old utensils and a designated muddy space.
  3. Butterfly garden - To bring some new wildlife to the garden, why not plant a few flowers like coneflowers and milkweed to attract butterflies? This is not only supporting butterflies but also fun for children.
